Frequently Asked Questions
What is PeraNabi Study?
PeraNabi Study is an adaptive study app built by Jason Kobayashi. It records your answers against specific grammar, vocabulary, and kanji concepts, then uses them to choose what you practice next and when things come back for review.
Who is PeraNabi Study for?
Learners working toward JLPT N5 who can already read kana and have studied some Japanese. It works best alongside a class, a textbook, or other study.
What is live right now?
The beta has a Mind Map of 588 concepts suited to JLPT learners, across grammar, vocabulary, and kanji. You can practice with sentence questions, vocabulary and kanji cards, listening, sentence building, reading stories, kanji writing, speaking, and verb conjugations, and save items to come back to later.
What makes it different from other study tools?
Every practice item is linked to the concepts it uses, so PeraNabi Study can see which grammar point, word, or kanji needs work, not just which card you missed. Your results and the time since your last review decide what comes back next.
How does PeraNabi Study choose what I practice?
It first chooses a practice type, then picks the item within that type from your answers and the time since you last practiced each concept. Some sentence questions have a ‘Why this now?’ button that explains why they were picked. If you take days off, there is no penalty; when you return, PeraNabi Study updates your plan.
What can the progress estimates tell me?
They reflect the practice recorded in PeraNabi Study, not everything you know, and they can become more or less certain as you answer. They have not been shown to predict your result on the real JLPT.
Do I need to take the Starting Check?
It is recommended but optional. It takes about 10 minutes (usually 16–24 questions) and gives PeraNabi Study a first picture of what you know, so your practice starts at your level. You can skip it for now and take it later.
Is PeraNabi Study a complete Japanese course?
No. The content centers on N5 and does not cover all of it yet; N4 and higher levels are planned. PeraNabi Study is a study companion, not a from-zero course, and it does not replace a teacher or using Japanese in real life.
What happens to my study data?
Your learning history is yours. You can download it from Settings at any time as a record of your study, and request account deletion there too. For speaking practice, your microphone audio stays on your device; only the recognized words and basic details about each attempt are sent. PeraNabi Study uses no third-party analytics or ad trackers.
Privacy PolicyWhich browsers and screen sizes are supported?
Use the latest Chrome, Edge, or Safari on a screen at least 360 pixels wide. Older versions, Firefox, Brave, and Chrome on Android may work, but are not officially supported. On iPhone and iPad, use Safari for speaking practice. If the 3D Mind Map feels slow, switch to 2D.
Browser RequirementsWho built PeraNabi Study?
Jason Kobayashi, a software engineer in Tokyo who has studied Japanese for over 30 years. PeraNabi Study is built with AI under his direction.
